Explanatory Notes for Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan Equality and Human Rights Network

The Equality and Human Rights Network for Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan was formed in late 2008. The Network consists of people from a range of equality organisations within the voluntary sector which seek to represent and speak on behalf of particular groups so that their needs can be properly recognised and addressed.

The core members of the network are

  • Age Concern Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan
  • Cardiff and Vale Coalition of Disabled People
  • Cardiff Interfaith Association
  • Children In Wales
  • LGBT Excellence Centre
  • Race Equality First
  • Stonewall Cymru
  • Transgender Wales
  • Wales Women’s National Coalition
  • [Menter Iaith Caerdydd - TBC]

The purpose of the network is to share information, commission research relevant to all our areas of work, identify areas of overlap, as well as areas of omission to see where new services are needed and where existing services can be refined.

One of the first objectives of the network is to establish a ‘One Stop Shop’ in the Cardiff and Vale areas which will carry out legal casework in relation to all ‘strands’ recognised in the Single Equality Bill

The network also plans to provide cross-strand representation on various forums and committees concerned with policy making. This will enable all communities affected by equality issues to have a voice in a wide range of influential arenas.

In future the network intends to discuss other practical ways to advance the equalities agenda, through interaction with the public and private sector in relation to their employment practices and service delivery, as well as tackling discrimination in any other areas where the need becomes apparent.

The network also intends to use online technology to reach and serve as many individuals as possible. The network’s website address is www.ehrnetwork.org – the site is still currently under development.

Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan Equality and Human Rights Network

Protocol of Understanding

We the undersigned commit to respect and cherish the dignity of every human being. We recognise that what we have in common far outweighs any differences between us. We will not be threatened or succumb to the politics of fear and hate. Where we do not understand each other we will make time to learn, however difficult this might seem.

Where it helps us achieve the best outcome, we will work together and with others to improve the lives of all through creating ambitious but realistic services which meet the needs of our diverse community. We will help deliver a joined up legal discrimination casework service so that those who experience the injustice of discrimination are not passed from one place to another, and so that they may not fear that their individual needs and experience will be ignored.

Through engaging with the communities of Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, with Cardiff Council, the Vale of Glamorgan Council and other policy makers, we will seek to individually and collectively represent the equalities agenda as a whole. And we will seek to influence decision making processes where there will be a beneficial influence on policies and practices which affect areas of our lives, both public and private.
